Dealing with pelvic pain alone can be very confusing and scary, but luckily, it can be addressed and possibly fixed through pelvic floor rehabilitation at Equilibrium in Victoria, BC.

Some of the most common pelvic conditions that our physiotherapists treat include those of prostatectomy patients, postpartum pelvic pain, pain following abdominal surgery, dyspareunia, and endometriosis.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy focuses on strengthening the ligaments, tendons, and muscles of the pelvic floor. When muscles in the pelvic area become tight or weak, your daily life can be negatively impacted, because this region helps in supporting the core of your body and is a key part of everyday movement.

Our pelvic floor physiotherapist will take a look at your medical history, and conduct a thorough examination to decide what type of treatment you’ll need. This may include stretches, ultrasound therapy, manual therapy, and at home exercises to reduce pain and strengthen or loosen your pelvic muscles, depending on your condition. If you or a loved one are struggling with pelvic pain, you may benefit from pelvic floor therapy.

Shockwave therapy accelerates the healing process in the body by stimulating the metabolism and enhancing blood circulation to regenerate damaged tissue. Shockwave technology delivers strong energy pulses that are applied to the affected area for short periods of time. This stimulates cells in the body that are responsible for bone and connective tissue healing. In many instances, shockwave therapy treatments, have proven to be effective in cases where the human body has not been able to heal itself on its own.

Shockwave can be incorporated into your physiotherapy, chiropractic or kinesiology appointment for an additional charge. Book your regular appointment and if suggested as a treatment option, we can add the modality on at the appointment. Shockwave is available at our Tillicum and Yates St locations.

What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is one of the principal branches of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). TCM is a complete, holistic and non-invasive medical system that has evolved over 3000 years to diagnose, treat and prevent illness. Acupuncture is a procedure which promotes health and alleviates pain.

How Does Acupuncture Work?
Traditional acupuncture is based on ancient Chinese theories of the flow of Qi (chee) and blood through energetic pathways in the body referred to as meridians. Qi is the animating force that gives us our capacity to move, think, and feel, in other words, our “vital force”. Meridians circulate life-giving nourishment in the form of Qi and blood to every part of the body.
In acupuncture, certain points on the body act as gateways to access and regulate the Qi in the meridians via the insertion of very fine needles. Qi regulates the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual harmony of the body by keeping the energetic flows in balance. Imbalances and blockages of the body’s Qi are the root of disease processes. These imbalances may be caused by physical and emotional trauma, lack of excercise, poor nutrition, and chronic stress. Acupuncture works by rebalancing the energetic system of the body and supporting the body’s capacity to heal itself. By alleviating symptoms and treating the underlying cause of disease, acupuncture returns the body, mind and spirit to a balanced state.

Fees are covered by most extended health insurance plans. For those with MSP Premium Assistance, a portion of the fee will be reimbursed. Members of Veterans Affairs, RCMP, and the Canadian Forces get Acupuncture treatments covered.

Prepare for your appointment just as if you were going for a massage.

Karl is a graduate of the Victoria WCCMT campus and has been practicing since 2011.

Karl’s treatment methodology is quite varied. Tear you apart and rebuild, or a gentle full body ahhhhhhh. A main component of Karl’s treatments is hot ocean stones and he uses them in the majority of his sessions. (Stone work currently available at the Tillicum location, the Yates location will be setup before the end of May)

Karl grew up homesteading and was on a path to become a conservation officer and take over his Mentor’s trap line when he moved to Victoria for university, fell in love with the city, and never left. He earned BA’s in Psychology and Sociology before moving on to the School of Social Work and then receiving a diploma in mediation/negotiation. Of course he then spent the next 10 years running chainsaw and jumping out of helicopters into remote forest fires….

Karl was a Varsity athlete, earning most valuable male athlete. This was when he became introduced to massage therapy. 10 years later when deciding on a new career, massage seemed a natural fit and he hasn’t looked back.

Cupping & Acupuncture Appointments Available Now!

I moved from Central Alberta to Victoria, BC to pursue my education in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine in 2016. I studied for 3.5 years at Pacific Rim College in Victoria, BC and graduated in June 2019. Prior to studying Acupuncture I was never sure what I wanted to do for a career. I spent a lot of time doing Administrative and Management work until I (luckily) found my way to Chinese Medicine. I grew up on a rural acreage south of Edmonton, Alberta and made my way out here to the island to attend Pacific Rim College.

In my spare time, I love expanding my knowledge and understanding of Chinese Medicine, indoor rock climbing, and exploring my way around the island, taking photos of plants and the natural beauty of this territory.

People always ask me what Acupuncture is best for, and I have this to say – the Acupuncture needle is like a direction we give to the body. It says to the body, ‘move this here’ or ‘build this here’ or, ‘hey, you’re going the wrong way, let’s fix that’. When the body is confused, weighed down or weak, it needs a little assistance, motivation and direction to perform its regular functions. This is a very simple way of looking at how Acupuncture works and why it works, although the medicine and pathophysiology in Chinese Medicine is, in actuality, quite complex.

A needle is a tool in the hands of an Acupuncturist. This tool can help us connect with dysfunction as well as touch significant sources of strength in a patient. A needle can reduce tension in tight muscles, direct energy to areas of emptiness, subdue overactivity and move stagnation.

When body functions aren’t working, when there is pain, or when there are irregular symptoms, we know there is something blocking the natural ability of the body, or that the body is merely not strong enough due to more chronic depletion. With Acupuncture, we can regulate body substances if they are overactive or deficient; we can encourage the removal of pathogenic substances that are causing congestion or stagnation; and we can nourish and tonify diminished substances to rebuild the body’s foundation.

Come in for a treatment, if you’re curious, or if you’ve had difficulty in the past determining what is causing you discomfort or weakness. I so look forward to meeting and working with you! See my list below for common (but not all!) disorders that can be helped with Acupuncture:

  • Acute & Chronic Pain

Marcel comes to Equilibrium with over 25 years of sport medicine and health care experience. Marcel is a Registered Massage Therapist and an Athletic Therapist giving him a unique approach to healthcare; his approach to wellness is movement based combining traditional therapy with strength training strategies. As a massage therapist his approach is a myofascial release base combined with postural alignment strategies including joint mobilization, muscle energy and tissue release techniques. Recently Marcel has started incorporating applied neurology as part of his treatment protocol. Applied neurology involves techniques that calm the brain which quite often is the main limiting factor in returning to optimal health. Whether you are looking for treatment for an acute sport injury, rehab from a surgical procedure, recovery from a hard workout or just a relaxation massage, Marcel has you covered. The end goal is always to help clients become a more robust person and to continue to live a healthy active life. While Marcel has worked his entire career with elite athletes at World championships and Olympic games t his motto has always been “you don’t have to be a world class athlete to receive world class treatment!” When not in the clinic you can find Marcel out on the hiking trails, on his road bike or camping in the backcountry. If you have time to spare, ask Marcel about his never-ending quest to brew the perfect espresso.

Having dual certification as an athletic therapist and a registered massage therapist, his rehab approach is movement based, combining traditional therapy with strength training strategies. As a massage therapist his approach is a myofascial release foundation combined with numerous other deep tissue strategies he has perfected over the years. Marcel started his career with the Toronto Blizzard Soccer club and from there went on to work with National Teams including Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams, Athletics Canada, Rowing Canada, Volleyball Canada and Speedskating Canada. He has also worked in several healthcare settings including private practice and post secondary institutions most recently at the University of Toronto’s David MacIntosh Sport Medicine clinic. Marcel has been to three winter Olympics and countless world championships, Pan AM games and Commonwealth games. Although he has worked with world class athletes his whole career, he maintains that “you don’t have to be a world class athlete to receive world class treatment!” Marcel has been fortunate to have lived across Canada including Victoria BC, Calgary Alberta, and St. John’s Newfoundland.

When not providing therapy services Marcel can be found exploring the trails and rivers/lakes in all seasons or trying to learn songs.
